Glasgow is by far the largest of Scotland's cities, with a population of 580,690 in 2006. The city is located at the centre of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley conurbation, which has a population of around 1,750,000.

Over 25% of the city's population is either disabled or has a long term limiting illness (Census, 2006). This compares with just over 20% of Scotland's population.

Glasgow has 3 million tourists per year. In addition, around 23% of its visitors come to do business in the city. The city is the second largest retail city in the UK after London, and the commercial capital of Scotland. Glasgow has a wide range of facilities to suit everyone, including excellent hotels and conference facilities, an array of museums and art galleries, first class leisure and shopping facilities, restaurants to suit every taste and pocket, spectacular architecture and much more. Glasgow is known the world over as 'the friendly city' and also as 'Scotland with Style' - and I am confident that you will find both to be the case.

The City Council and its partners are committed to making the city as accessible as possible to all our residents and visitors. We are therefore delighted to support this on-line guide, the purpose of which is to enable disabled residents and visitors to make informed choices about accessing all that Glasgow has to offer, including a wide range of cultural, community, sporting, shopping and entertainment venues.

Disabled Glaswegians are involved in the regular updating and expansion of the guide and their input is greatly valued.
