Introduction (Route Information)

  • The distance of the route is approximately 230m and should take approximately 5.3 minutes. There are easy slopes and ramps as part of the route by-passing steps. The surface along the route includes multi-coloured granite, concrete and stone paving, polished stone tiling and vinyl flooring. The route is from the main entrance by the William Harley Building, up the slope, along the path in front of the George Moore Building, to enter at the building main entrance at first floor level via the ramp in front of the Govan Mbeki Building.
  • Buchannan Bus Station is located on the other side of Cowcaddens Road from the University. There is both an underpass and a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights to cross Cowcaddens Road to reach the Main Entrance adjacent to the William Harley Building.

    • Please note: Alternative access is available to the Campus Life Lounge through the Main Entrance - Ground Floor of the George Moore building. However, this requires not only ramped access but also the use of a lift. This route plan provides lift free entry via the ramp in front of the Govan Mbeki building entrance.

Main Entrance Slope

  • There is a slope at the campus entrance.
  • Along the slope there is the main entrance to the William Harley Building to the right and the Britannia Building to the left. This slope has an easy gradient.
  • After 30m from the beginning of the slope there is a railing to the right of the slope.
  • To the left at this point there is the entrance into the Britannia Building.

Main Entrance Slope to the Bike Racks

  • At the top of the slope turn right up the main path between the William Harley Building on the right and the George Moore Building on the left until you reach the bike racks on the right.
  • The distance to the bike racks is approximately 70m and the path has an easy slope.
  • The surface is uneven with multi coloured granite tile paving and some slightly raised ironworks.
  • To the right there is a raised flower bed, then steps up to the William Harley Building, then to the security office.
  • There is a row of pillars in front of the George Moore Building ground floor to the left.

Bike Racks to the end of the George Moore Building

  • Continue along the path a distance of about 15m.
  • Go past the bike racks on the right to the end of the multi-coloured paving at the end of the George Moore Building.
  • The path narrows at this section but remains broad. The surface is uneven with multi coloured granite tile paving.
  • To the left the row of pillars continue to a change of paving at the end of the George Moore Building.

End of the George Moore Building to the Up Ramp

  • At the end of the George Moore Building, the path narrows from the left where there is a raised flower bed.
  • Continue along the path a distance of about 30m.
  • The paving changes to concrete and stone tile paving and is uneven.
  • To the right there are steps down to the CEE Building and a line of brick pilasters. The tops of the steps are marked by tactile paving.
  • To the left is the flower bed then steps up to the Govan Mbeki and George Moore entrances. There is tactile paving at the base and top of these steps.
  • Continue to the ramp to the right of the steps.
  • Turn left up the ramp then left again at the top of the ramp.
  • The George Moore Building main entrance is then accessed via the ramp and path in front of the Govan Mbeki Building entrance. The ramp and path have concrete slab paving.

Level Change (Main Entrance - Level 1 - Shared Common Access)

  • There is a ramp/slope to access this area/service.
  • The ramp/slope does bypass the step(s).
  • The ramp/slope is permanent.
  • There is a level landing at the top of the ramp/slope.
  • The ramp does have handrails.
  • The handrails are on both sides.
  • There is a/are step(s) to access this area/service.
  • The step(s) is/are located in front of the Govan Mbeki Building.
  • There is/are 10 step(s) to the area/service.
  • There is tactile paving at the top and bottom of the steps.
  • The step(s) is/are not clearly marked.
  • The step(s) is/are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
  • There is a/are handrail(s) at the step(s).
  • The handrail(s) is/are on both sides.
  • Comments View
    • These steps and ramp give access to both the Govan Mbeki Building main entrance and the George Moore main entrance - first floor.
    • The slope continues up to the main entrance with handrails both sides.
    • The ramp was fenced off for construction works at the time of guide update in February 2023.

Outside Access (Main Entrance - Level 1)

Main Entrance to Campus Life Lounge

  • On entering the George Moore Main Entrance - Level 1, turn right into the lobby.
  • The flooring is even with stone tile paving.
  • To the left is the entry to the Campus Life Desk.
  • In front is the entry to the Campus Life Lounge via three medium steps without handrails.
  • To bypass the steps, turn right and then left up the ramp. The slope is easy and the width is 150cm.
  • There are no handrails.
  • The flooring to the lobby and ramp is vinyl.
  • At the top of the ramp turn right and enter through the doors to the Campus Life Lounge.
  • The doors open away from you (push) are 165cm wide and are permanently held open. There are a second set of similar doors as you enter the main lounge.
  • The main corridor through the lounge is vinyl with carpet to one side.
