Access Guide

  • The Holmes is affiliated to Churchill Hall, 50m away, where all the social and administration facilities are based.

  • There are steps to all rooms in The Holmes. The most accessible entrance is at the back of the house through the accessible entrance to the Botanic Garden Cafe although there is still a single step inside.

  • The Holmes is a house built in 1878 and surrounded by the universtity's Botanic Garden. It was the HQ of the American General Staff during World War II, prior to the Liberation of Europe. The rooms are named after some of the Generals who stayed there, including Eisenhower and Bradley.

  • From the city centre follow the A4018 towards Redland and Westbury. At the top of Whiteladies Road go straight ahead on Stoke Road crossing the parkland area called The Downs. 200m beyond the traffic lights at Stoke Road / Saville Road turn right onto Stoke Park Road, signposted University of Bristol Botanical Garden. The Holmes is within the University Botanic Garden 300m along Stoke Park Road, opposite the gateway to Churchill Hall.

  • There is parking onsite for visitors to the Botanic Garden. Residents must have a permit.

  • From the City Centre take bus number 4 towards Cribbs Causeway. The bus takes 18 minutes to the junction of Downleaze and Saville Road. Walk down Downleaze, cross Stoke Park Hill and follow along Stoke Park Road. The gateway marked for the University Botanic Garden is on the right, opposite Churchill Hall. Go in through the gateway and bear left to the front of The Holmes. Total distance 600m. Alternatively the university bus service, number 16, travels between the Transport Hub in Stoke Bishop (adjacent to Hiatt Baker Hall) and the city centre via the university campuses. The route to The Holmes involves steep slopes. There is a detailed route plan from the Transport Hub to Churchill Hall via The Holmes.
