Introduction
- The following information describes the route from Westminster Underground Station to St Thomas’ Hospital.
- The approximate distance of this route is 0.3 miles.
- This route takes approximately 7 minutes.
- The route leads from Westminster Tube Station to Victoria Embankment, across and over Westminster Bridge and from Westminster Bridge Road along the hospital access path to the St Thomas' Hospital main entrance.
- The final section describes the route leading through St Thomas' Hospital to the entrance of the Evelina London Children's Hospital.
- The majority of paths along the route are tarmac or flagstones with some slight, easy or moderate gradients in places.
- There is street signage located along the route directing you to the hospital.
- There is public parking located on Great College Street.
- The potential hazards on this route include; busy roads, crossing points, congested pathways and uneven surfaces.
Westminster Tube Station Lift - Victoria Embankment Crossing
- On exiting the lift from the ticket hall on to street level proceed between the pillars on to the street and turn left.
- There is an easy slope between the pillars.
- The surface of the pathway is flagstones.
- Continue ahead on Great George's Street.
- There is a moderate slope upwards as you approach the Victoria Embankment Crossing.
- The crossing is approximately 30m from the Westminster Tube Station lift.
Victoria Embankment Crossing
- The crossing consists of two crossing points.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from your left.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
- The surface of the near side crossing point consists of flagstones.
- The surface of the far side crossing point consists of smooth tarmac.
- Each crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
- The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
- The buttons are at a height of 100cm.
- There are rotating cones at the crossing.
- Caution is advised when crossing due to heavy traffic.
- After the crossing turn right.
- There is a moderate slope upwards between this crossing and the Westminster Bridge Crossing.
- The surface between the two crossings is tarmac.
Westminster Bridge Crossing
- The crossing consists of two road crossings and a cycle lane crossing.
- The buttons are at a height of 100cm.
- There are rotating cones at the crossing.
- At the first crossing point traffic is coming from your right.
- At the second crossing point traffic is coming from your left.
- At the third crossing point traffic is coming from your left.
- There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at the first crossing point.
- The surface at the crossing point is smooth tarmac.
- The crossings are operated by push button, further to the light indicators located on the posts there is also a display indicating via countdown in seconds the time available to cross.
- Caution is advised when crossing due to heavy traffic.
- Turn left after crossing and continue ahead.
Westminster Bridge - Westminster Bridge Road
- After crossing Westminster Bridge the route follows Westminster Bridge Road.
- There is step free access throughout this part of the route.
- The surface of the bridge is tarmac.
- There are obstacles in the middle of the pavement at either end of the brief these have a width of 120cm either side.
- There is an upwards easy slope before a moderate downwards slope as you join Westminster Bridge Road.
- After the moderate downwards slope the surface becomes flagstones that are uneven in places.
- The road is busy.
- There is a gully that runs along the water side edge of the walkway on the bridge.
- There are barriers that separate the pavement and road.
- There are intermittent strips of tactile metal plating on the bridge.
- Westminster Bridge is approximately 250m long.
- After passing over the bridge continue on Westminster Bridge Road for approximately 60m.
- Turn right after the St Thomas' Hospital sign at the set of bollards and take the hospital access path.
Westminster Bridge Road - St Thomas Hospital Main Entrance
- After the bollards the surface consists of uneven concrete.
- There is a moderate slope leading downwards.
- At the bottom of the slope turn right and then left.
- Continue ahead towards the hospital main entrance.
- The route from Westminster Bridge Road to the hospital main entrance is approximately 80m.

- The door(s) is/are double width.
- The width of the door opening is 150cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.
- There is a second set of doors.
- The door(s) open(s) automatically.

St Thomas' Hospital Main Entrance - Evelina Children's Hospital Entrance
- On entering via the main entrance, turn left into the Lambeth Wing.
- Follow the corridor which bears to the right until you reach the entrance to the Emergency Floor.
- Follow this corridor past 4 sets of double doors.
- The entrance to the link bridge to Evelina Children's Hospital is on your left hand side.
- Follow the link bridge down a slight slope with handrails on both sides.
- The entrance to the Evelina Children's Hospital is directly ahead.
