Foreword by Councillor Diane Bedford, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Youth, Rushmoor Borough Council
Rushmoor is an urban area and includes the towns of Aldershot and Farnborough, and the smaller areas of Cove and North Camp.
Aldershot is world-famous as the home of the British Army and Farnborough's main claim to fame is the biennial International Air Show, held on the site of the birthplace of flying and aeronautical research in Britain.
Aldershot and Farnborough are just an hour from London and our excellent transport links make it an easy destination to reach, whether you are travelling by road, train, ferry, coach and bus. The borough of Rushmoor covers an area of 3,900 hectares, which ranges from urban to open spaces and large wooded areas, so there will be plenty to keep you occupied during your visit. We are also an ideal stopover for travels further afield.
The area is very diverse, with many leisure and cultural attractions for everyone to enjoy, supplemented by the wealth of leisure and sports provision in and around the Army areas.
Rushmoor is lucky to have three varied and interesting shopping centres.
Aldershot’s centre reflects the Victorian heritage of the town – fine examples of Victorian architecture combine with modern shops. Westgate, a multi-million pound development, due to open late 2012 will bring a new multiplex cinema, restaurants, a hotel and Morrisons' food store.
Farnborough’s town centre is a clean, modern and lively commercial centre with 3 main shopping areas. Princes Mead and The Meads, which incorporates a pedestrian precinct and indoor shopping centre takes you to a newly developed area, which includes a large Sainsbury’s store.
North Camp’s shopping centre is at the South of Farnborough and has traditionally been the home for speciality shops and independent retailers.
I am delighted to be working in partnership with DisabledGo to provide this important information to both local people, their families as well as visitors to the area.
The access guide provides information of more than 1000 venues, ranging from leisure facilities, museums, theatres, shops, restaurants and tourist attractions. All the venues have been chosen by the local community for the local community and visitors.
