The Children and Adult Services Directorate of the London Borough of Havering is delighted to be working in conjunction with DisabledGo to give parents/carers and buildings users accurate information about the suitability of schools buildings for disabled users. We are totally committed to providing inclusive education and ensuring that all learners have what they need to access learning
All mainstream schools are able to meet a range of special educational needs and in addition some have a resource base for pupils with specific needs.
Access to these bases are through the Local Authority.
Schools now have a much greater stake in the management of their premises including accessibility of the school building. Above all, governing bodies and head teachers need to ensure that adequate arrangements are in place to meet all statutory requirements, which includes compliance with the Equality Act. This includes changes to school buildings and identifying necessary resources, which will assist in to overcoming barriers.
The Surveys carried out by DisabledGo on behalf of the Local Authority sets out the responsibilities for the repair, maintenance and development of school buildings in relation to the Equality Act. It provides information, guidance and support to help governors and head teachers reach decisions about needs, how to address those needs and establish priorities for future investment in terms of the Equality Act linked to the school development plan and school asset management plan.
The Survey will be reproduced in full on the Havering Intranet website and, in accordance with the Council’s sustainability policy, no further editions will be produced on paper. We shall continue to review the content through consultation and update the guidance as and when the need arises; the website, therefore, will increasingly reflect developments in asset management policies, techniques and contacts.
