Foreword by Councillor Richard Grosvenor, Leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council and Member champion for equalities.
East Staffordshire Borough Council is committed to promoting equality and creating a fairer Borough. Through our partnership with DisabledGo we hope to give all residents and visitors the information they need to choose the services that suit them best. This guide covers a huge range of venues from shops to restaurants, post offices to leisure centres.
Located in the Heart of England, East Staffordshire is proud of its position as capital of the National Forest. We have a rich history with links to Mary Queen of Scots, Robert Peel and Henry Ferrers the Norman landowner and founder of a Priory at Tutbury Castle. Burton upon Trent is probably best known as the home of the great brewing companies such as Bass and Marston’s and the much loved (by some) product made from brewer’s yeast, Marmite. 2010 will also see the opening of the National Museum of Brewing in the town centre. Nearby, in the village of Abbots Bromley there is the annual spectacle of the Horn Dance, a unique piece of British tradition.
East Staffordshire can boast some of the most beautiful countryside in the country along the banks of the rivers Trent and Dove; we also have a flourishing network of working canals which attracts visitors from all over the country. Throughout the district we have a range of restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes and pockets. The Borough Council has worked with local food outlets to develop a Healthy Options Scheme and awards certificates to businesses that offer healthy options on their menus; winners can be found on the Rate My Place website. Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter are thriving towns, with Burton upon Trent having a compact, level town centre, extensive covered shopping facilities and a wealth of entertainment facilities.
East Staffordshire Borough Council works in partnership with not only DisabledGo and Marks and Spencer but also Shopmobility, Burton Town Centre Management and the Coopers Square and Octagon Shopping Centres. We always try to listen to members of the local community and hope this guide will enable anyone visiting our area to find the facilities they need.
I hope that you enjoy the time you spend in East Staffordshire.
