York is one of England's finest and most beautiful historic cities. The city is a mixture of Medieval, Georgian and Victorian streets and buildings which support today's shops, restaurants, pubs, leisure facilities and festivals. York has many places to explore whether you are one of our four million annual visitors or a local resident.
Despite the historical nature of York, many buildings and services are accessible to many disabled people. City of York Council, York Tourism and the University of York are happy to sponsor the Disabled Go website to help promote independent living for disabled people in York.
York also provides other services for disabled people:
Shopmobility lends wheelchairs (manual and powered) and scooters to anyone who's mobility is limited for whatever reason. The service is provided to both residents and visitors. It is located on level 2 of the Coppergate Centre car park, Piccadilly. For more information contact:

Talking Signs automatically speak information to people who approach the sign carrying a small 'REACT' unit, helping people with visual impairments to know where they are in the city centre. (The signs can speak in one of four different languages - English, Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati) The 'REACT' units are available from:

Dial and Ride is a service for people with difficulty walking or using public transport. Specially adapted buses offer a door to door service from your home to the city centre or out of town supermarkets. Tel: (01904) 624455
York Wheels is a voluntary sector service for people who have trouble using public transport. It's available to people who live within the council area. Volunteer drivers, using their own cars, provide a service for a small charge. There are also two minibuses small groups can hire. tel: (01904) 630080 for more information.
Public Toilets have facilities for disabled people but you will need a RADAR key to get into them unless they are attended. All disabled facilities are locked between 8pm and 8am. Keys cost £3.50 and you can get one if you take proof of disability, such as a blue badge or a letter from your doctor, to:
