Blackburn College

Welcome

Blackburn College was founded in 1888 as the Technical College for the town. Its initial curriculum base was vocational with a strong emphasis on Textiles and Engineering, as well as Art, Physics, Chemistry and Building. The original Blackburn College building is still in constant use today and is known as the Victoria Centre. It is a Grade II listed building and was extended in 2005.
In 2002 Blackburn College was awarded its first Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Digital Communication Technology and since then has gone on to achieve recognition and funding for 3 further Centres of Vocational Excellence - in Childhood Studies, Teaching Support Staff and Textiles into Fashion.

In the same year all the Higher Education offered in Blackburn College was centralised to create the Higher Education Centre, which today provides over 75% of the Higher Education in East Lancashire and is known as The East Lancashire Institute of Higher Education at Blackburn College.

The College is currently undergoing a period of investment into a series of new buildings, as part of the College's multi-million pound development plan to create a world-class campus. The first phase, the St Paul's Centre, was completed in September 2007 and work has recently begun on the second phase which involves the construction of a new five-storey Higher Education building with completion anticipated to be summer 2009.

Further phases of the Master Plan include plans to develop a new Adult Learning Centre and new teaching facilities housing state-of-the-art sports, media, music, performing arts, dance and photography facilities. The historic Victoria building will also be upgraded and refurbished.

Blackburn College has long held a belief that including disabled students within the mainstream college, supports those learners in playing an active and positive role both in college life and in the economic life of the country.

The College offers a range of courses, including degrees and professional studies. For more information on courses offered at the College call 01254 29 29 29 or visit www.blackburn.ac.uk.
