Introduction

  • This route plan covers the journey from the Main Gate on University Avenue to the Molema Building on Lilybank Gardens.
    The journey is approximately 310m (0.2 mile).
    For those without mobility difficulties it may take about 3-4 minutes to cover.
    From the exit junction from University Gardens to the entrance junction there is a downhill slope along University Avenue.
    This section may be challenging to those with mobility difficulties, including the return journey.
    This routes also incorporates access to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, Boyd Orr and Sir Alwyn Williams Buildings.

Exit the Main Gate and Turn Left

  • Exit the right main gate and turn left onto University Avenue.
  • If exiting from the gate on the left as you face the main gate (from University Avenue - photograph 1), cross the quiet entrance road towards the right gate.
  • The main gate entrance road is level to the kerbs without tactile paving on either side.
  • There is a paved surface with some tactile paving near the pedestrian crossing over the busy main road.

Cross University Avenue at the Pedestrian Crossing

  • Take a slight left from the main gate to the nearby pedestrian crossing on University Avenue.
  • Cross University Avenue using the pedestrian crossing.
  • This is an automatic crossing where the buttons no longer need to be pressed.
  • The crossing controls are 115cm high and offer a tactile turning dial beneath the box.
  • There are lowered kerbs with tactile marking on both sides.
  • There are audio and visual signals with metal studs showing the route across the road.

Turn Left and Continue down University Avenue

  • Turn left after the crossing and continue down University Avenue.
  • The junction to University Gardens is only around 15m from the crossing.
  • There is a paved surface with an easy slope down University Avenue.

Cross the Exit Junction to University Gardens

  • Cross the exit road from University Gardens which should only have any traffic coming from the right being a one-way system.
  • The road was restricted to non-vehicular traffic by 3 black and white bollards at the time of survey in July 2023.
  • The crossing point at the junction is over a raised tarmac speed bump.
  • There is an easy slope downwards across the junction exit crossing.
  • The road is raised level with the kerbs which have tactile paving on both sides.

Continue Down University Avenue

  • Continue down University Avenue towards the junction for inbound traffic to University Gardens.
  • There is an easy to moderate slope down the road with a slight camber on the pavement.

Cross the Entry Junction to University Gardens

  • Cross the entry road from University Gardens which is a one way road with any traffic approaching from the left.
  • The crossing point at the junction is over a raised tarmac speed bump.
  • There is an easy slope downwards across the junction entry crossing.
  • The road is raised level with the kerbs which have tactile paving on both sides.

Turn Right into University Gardens

  • Turn back up to the right once across, following the pavement into University Gardens.
  • There is a moderate slope on the corner which leads to an easy slope at first which then levels out further along.
  • The pavement surface is paving slabs.

Continue along University Gardens

  • After a short distance the pavement widens out to the left prior to the large James McCune Smith Learning Hub building.
  • There are 15+ steps with handrails on both sides and tactile paving at the top which lead further down University Avenue and to the main Level 2 and Level 1 entrances of the building.
  • The Level 3 Mezzanine entrance is located slightly further along University Gardens where there is a swipe card bollard in the pavement near the doors.
  • There are dropped kerbs to access the building from nearby designated parking to the left of the pavement.
  • There are also bollards along the left of the pavement here.

Access to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub

  • The James McCune Smith Learning Hub Level 3 Mezzanine entrance is located near the designated parking on University Gardens, beneath the protruding copper section of the building.
  • Further along, near the end of the building at the Link Road there are steps with tactile paving at the top which lead down to the Level 2 (West) Courtyard entrance.
  • Further along from the steps before the Boyd Orr Building, there is an easy slope which can be used to bypass the steps back down to this entrance.
  • All levels within the building are linked by lift and there are also adjoining links to the Boyd Orr Building internally on various levels.

University Gardens to Link Road

  • Continue along past the Level 3 Mezzanine entrance to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub building towards where University Gardens road surface begins to turn right, at the Link Road.
  • The pavement continues straight on beside the building to the left, and the link road between University Gardens and Lilybank Gardens is now on the right.
  • Shortly before the end of the building the pavement narrows back in from the left and there is an easy slope up and back down at an emergency exit.
  • The slope offers a handrail on the right, beside the road.
  • There are barriers on either side of the emergency exit doors on the left which narrow the pavement slightly.
  • Beyond the easy slope back down is where the Link Road begins and there are still bollards to the right.
  • The Link Road has a light coloured surface similar to that of the pavement, but it is made of a smaller block paving.
  • The Link Road is signed for authorised vehicle use only.

Link Road to Lilybank Gardens

  • Towards the end of the James McCune Learning Hub building on the left, there are steps down towards its Level 2 (West) courtyard entrance which have tactile paving at the top.
  • There is a low wall and a bench to sit on beyond the access to the steps.
  • Continue along the link road until you reach Lilybank Gardens.
  • There is an easy downward slope throughout.
  • The Boyd Orr Building is on your left beyond the sloped access back to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, and the Sir Alwyn Williams Building is across on the right.
  • The pavement to the left of the Link Road leads directly onto the Lilybank Gardens pavement.

Access to the Boyd Orr Building

  • The Boyd Orr Building is the tall tower block down to the left beyond the slope access to the James McCune Smith Learning Hub.
  • There is an easy wide slope down over a paved surface.

Access to the Sir Alwyn Williams Building

  • Turn back right onto the adjoining pavement from Lilybank Gardens.
  • Continue back up round following the pavement across the link road which may be used by authorised traffic, or Blue Badge holders accessing a designated parking bay here.
  • The ramp to the Sir Alwyn Williams Building is to the rear left of the entrance area near Lilybank Gardens after some bollards.
  • There is a paved surface towards the ramp.
  • The link road can also be crossed earlier if using the steps to the right of the entrance.
  • The Boyd Orr building is roughly opposite this entrance across the link road.
  • There are some concrete benches to the front left of the entrance area here near the bollards.
  • Link to Sir Alwyn Williams Building.

Proceed to Lilybank Gardens

  • Continue ahead along the pavement which joins the pavement around the crescent of Lilybank Gardens where the Molema Building begins.
  • There is an easy slope downwards over the tarmac surface.
  • The Molema Building entrance is ahead on the far corner of the crescent.

Access to the Molema Building on the Left

  • Continue down Lilybank Gardens to the corner of the crescent and use the ramp to access the Molema Building.
