Route Summary

  • This route plan is for the purpose of providing an alternative route to the parade and the Library if the service road lift is out of use.

Service Road Lift

  • This lift allows non stepped access to the Library via the Parade.
  • There is an intercom and CCTV system in operation to use this lift.
  • The person using the lift will need to push the intercom button (which will connect to the main Security desk). Security will then grant the user permission to use the lift.
  • If this lift is out of service during your visit the following route will describe alternative non stepped access to the Library via the Chancellors' building.

Service Road Lift to the Convocation Avenue Crossing

  • From the service road lift continue straight along the path towards the Convocation Avenue crossing, the university bus stop is located on the right with the crossing opposite on the left.
  • There is a path which runs alongside the service road.
  • There are easy slopes and uneven surfaces located along the path.
  • The surface of the service road pathway is made up of concrete with areas of block paving outside the lift.
  • The service road pathway is slippery in places especially when wet.
  • There are two small flower beds with areas of compacted earth and uneven edges as you continue along the path.
  • There are lights set into the floor located around the university bus stop. These can be slippery in wet of cold conditions.

Convocation Avenue Crossing

  • The Convocation Avenue crossing is raised to provide level access either side of the crossing.
  • There is slightly uneven tactile paving at both sides of the road.
  • There are easy slopes on either side of the crossing.
  • Continue onto the access path at the far side of the crossing.

Convocation Avenue Crossing to the Chancellors' Building

  • There is an access path leading from the Convocation Avenue crossing to the Chancellors' Building.
  • The surface of the access path is tarmac which becomes block paving as you approach Chancellors' Building.
  • The first section of the path can be muddy in places during wet weather.
  • The path is uneven in places.
  • The first section of the path is on a moderate slope leading up.
  • Continue along the slope for approximately 18m before turning left.
  • The path now slopes downwards.
  • At the bottom of the slope turn right towards the Chancellors' Building.
  • There are 4 removable bollards located at this point. When removed the base of the bollard fixings are uneven.
  • After approximately 10m the path surface becomes block paving.
  • There are a further 3 removable bollards located at this point. When removed the base of the bollard fixings are uneven.
  • There is a small lip where the pavement meets the road.
  • The entrance to Chancellors' Building is located on the left approximately 40m from where the block paving begins.

Outside Access (Chancellors' Building Main Entrance)

  • This information is for the entrance located at the front of the building.
  • There is not level access into the venue.
  • The main door(s) open(s) automatically.
  • The door(s) is / are double.
  • The width of the door opening is 140cm (4ft 7in).

    • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.

    • There are lights set into the floor located around the Chancellors' Building main entrance. These can be slippery in wet or cold conditions.

Level Change (Chancellors' Building Main Entrance)

  • There is a ramp or slope to access this service.

Chancellors' Building Main Entrance to the Chancellors' Building Lift

Chancellors' Building Lift to the Bridge

  • Exit the lift on Level 2 for access to the bridge.
  • On exiting the lift turn left and left again, continue straight ahead towards the doors that lead onto the bridge.
  • There are two sets of doors which are automatic, double width and open away from you.
  • The doors can also be opened via a touch centre located to the right of the doors.

The Bridge to the Parade

  • The bridge is made up of a dimpled metallic surface.
  • The bridge is a series of easy slopes with level landings between them.
  • There is a slight lip at the end of the bridge where it joins the access path.
  • Continue along the bridge for approximately 50m, after 20m turn left onto the access path.
  • The surface of the access path is tarmaced shingle that becomes block paving on turning left towards the Parade.
  • For the first section of block paving there are areas of uneven concrete.
  • The block paving is uneven in places.
  • Continue ahead for 30m, on reaching the Parade the surface becomes large flag stones.

The Parade to the Library

  • The surface of the Parade walkway is made up of large flag stones which are uneven in places.
  • After approximately 25m turn right and the library is located on the right.
